Diamond Jubilee Marathon Day Five

Diamond Jubilee Marathon Day Five

The Energiser

In life, we as people, are complex energy systems. We can be significantly affected by the energy others transmit, and simultaneously, the energy we give out to the world affects how life interacts with each and every one of us.

All of us are influenced by people who are capable of energizing us. Usually it may be in the form of a hero, a great coach, a close friend, a loving family member etc , and the impact that such a person’s words can have on us can be incredible. The intimacy and quality of the relationship enables their presence and words to be impactful. Loving energy is powerful. It transcends all.

Today, on Day 5 of The Diamond Jubilee Marathon, I witnessed the loving energy people offered Lloyd and ourselves as we walked through the hordes busy with either their jobs, or visitors to the capital ahead of the weekend’s celebrations. Lloyd’s natural love for people shone through too, each time we stopped and well-wishers wanted to take a photograph of him in his full regalia with either helmet on, or off.

Lloyd may have been hurting, and today he commented that it has been the toughest day ever in the Diving Suit. However, he never complains or even mentions how challenging he is finding his circumstances. He really is a marvel, and one of the most remarkable human beings one could ever wish to meet. For me personally, being ‘one step behind’ him every day of his Diamond Jubilee Marathon has offered me the opportunity to learn so much more about his many qualities.

As his support team, it has been a privilege to have observed the esteem in which the great British public seems to have for him. The response from well-wishers today, and the generosity of people with regard to donations to The Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, has been awesome. Lunchtime in Leadenhall Market today was memorable. To the gentlemen who organized our seating and drinks – a big heartfelt thanks from us all…

We all need support, and when it comes from surprising sources, it can be exhilarating. However, we all need anchors, and having trusted people who one knows are definitely in one’s corner through the most challenging moments, is re-assuring to even the most confident of individuals.

Over the past sixty years many politicians may have failed us, but Her Majesty The Queen never has.

It was interesting to read Prime Minister David Cameron’s generous comments about how supportive and helpful Her Majesty is towards him in his role, especially with her ability to see, and talk common sense. Other former Prime Ministers have been quoted too and have lauded her contribution to their term as leader.

Leaders come in all shapes and sizes, but in my humble opinion, the best inspire others through the quality of their personal example. Others may have fancy titles, and power, (and possibly money and authority) but often those who lead us best, are those who achieve so much in life with limited resources and by accessing their own internal source of power – the understated achievers whose deeds go beyond their words. My favorite examples would be: great teachers who leave a lifetime impression on us or great explorers who kept going through all sorts of difficulties to discover a new destination, or the famous scientists who show the perseverance to keep testing their hypotheses are the kind of individuals who display the virtues which create a level of admiration in us which often goes beyond the lifetime of the person and their deeds.

I wonder what people will make of Lloyd Scott and his remarkable charity endeavours in years to come? Now that he is ready to ‘hang up his boots’, a new world awaits him. ‘Retirement’ can be difficult, but my sense is that the timing is perfect for Lloyd to close this chapter of his life, and move into other things which make use of his experiences and his desire to help others less fortunate than himself.

Lloyd said that today reminded him of some of ‘the old days’ in his other costumes, and the camaraderie associated with some of the great experiences he enjoyed previously. All sorts of individuals stopped us today and shared their good wishes and also inquired about The Trust, while simultaneously expressing their love and respect for Her Majesty. It has been an uplifting day in so many ways.

It has been an inspirational day, and as we near the finishing line, and London finalises its preparations for the biggest party in the lifetime of most of us in the UK, I Would like to give thanks to all who have made today (and also the past four days) some of the most enjoyable, satisfying, and memorable, I have had the pleasure of experiencing.

The Diamond Jubilee is bringing out the best in people’s hearts and minds..…
